An autistic child in New York went missing three weeks ago. Fourteen year old Avonte Oquendo ran out of his New York City school earlier this month. He's not been seen since, despite a massive search.

It raises the issue of  families with autistic children who say it's common for autistic children to wander away without warning.

A survey of 1200 families published by the American academy of pediatrics  found almost half of them had an austistic child that wandered off at least once.

The Centers for Disease Control says about one in every 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder.
