Fall is a popular season for marathons and other running events. But, doctors say that many runners don't ease into their training, don't have the right footwear, and don't realize the importance of downtime. This negligence can cause some annoying and lengthy injuries such as muscle pulls, stress fractures, and sprained ankles.
Taking each work out in stride and paying attention to her body is what 34-year-old Nichole Naranjo says she had to learn, the hard way. After several weeks of running in pain, last February she learned she needed hip surgery. For three months this avid runner had to sit out and stop training for the upcoming New York City Marathon. Tak Fukumaga is Nichole's physical therapist. He runs a free running clinic at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York . He deals with a lot of injuries this time of year with so many runners gearing up for races. He says that's because many runners don't ease into their training, some don't have the right footwear, and many don't realize the importance of downtime. Nichole learned how to stretch her injury. She took time to build up her endurance and mileage again. Now she's ready to cross the finish line in next month's marathon. Doctors say some of the most common running injuries are muscle pulls, stress fractures and sprained ankles.
