The Taylor County Sheriff's Office will team with Air Evac, Metrocare, and Texas Parks and Wildlife to take part in the local Kmart store's "Safety Weekend," this Saturday and Sunday. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will spotlight each agency's role in urging citizens to be safe at all times.

Sheriff's Office staff members will be handing out child ID kits (for parents to keep in-home fingerprint records on their children), pencils, coloring books, candy and plush toys.

In conjunction with "National Domestic Violence Awareness Month" which is observed each October, TCSO representatives will also be collecting used cell phones, which will then be donated to the "911 Cell Phone Bank."

The phones are refurbished and given to crime victims and the elderly, so that they can have a no-cost way of contacting 911 in an emergency.

Nearly 300 phones have been collected by TCSO and donated to the cell phone bank over the past two years, and a dozen phones have been requested locally and given to needy Abilene families.
