Texas Wsleyan Leads After First Round of Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate

ABILENE – Calvin Clyde of Texas Wesleyan fired a 5-under-par 66 Monday in the first round of the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament and will take the individual medalist lead into Tuesday's final round of the tournament at the Diamondback Golf Club.

ABILENE – Calvin Clyde of Texas Wesleyan fired a 5-under-par 66 Monday in the first round of the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament and will take the individual medalist lead into Tuesday's final round of the tournament at the Diamondback Golf Club.

Texas Wesleyan has the team lead after the Rams fired a 286 over the par-71, 6,977-yard layout in southeast Abilene. Midland College is in second place just three shots behind the Rams, while Odessa College is in third at 290, followed by ACU in fourth at 291 and the ACU JV in fifth at 295.

Clyde's 66 has him in the individual lead by three strokes over Cody Buffalo of New Mexico Junior College, who shot a first-round 69 on Monday. David Wicks of Midland College, Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech, Kaden Walter and Corbin Renner of ACU and Micah Rodgers of Odessa College are all tied for third at 1-under-par 70.

Renner fired a 33 over the front nine before finishing with a back-nine 37 on Monday to lead the way for the Wildcats. Trey Sullivan – playing in his first competitive round since last March because of back problems and ensuing surgery – shot a 2-over-par 73 and is tied for 14th. Newcomer Brandon Stites and Luke Carpenter are each tied for 21st at 3-over-par 74, while Kyle Karmei is tied for 31st at 4-over-par 75.

The ACU JV is led by Walters, who shot 35-35 for his 1-under-par 70. Kyle Kennedy is tied for 14th after a 73, while Ian Evans shot 75, Robert Johnson 77 and Hunter Rawls 78.
