The Texas Department of Transportation is reporting a two-mile portion of I-20 in Mitchell County had to be shut down due to numerous wrecks
10 p.m. UPDATE: TxDOT reports that Interstate 20 is now open in Mitchell County.

Original Story:

The Texas Department of Transportation has released the following statement regarding the closure of a portion of Interstate 20 in Mitchell County:

Multiple wrecks on I-20 between Mile Markers 226 and 228 have made it necessary to divert traffic from the main lanes in both directions. Crews are working to clear the incidents and expect to reopen the main lanes in about half an hour.

Winter weather and freezing precipitation are causing very hazardous driving conditions. Patches of black ice have been reported along the I-20 corridor from Eastland to Odessa. Conditions are expected to deteriorate tonight. Travel is strongly discouraged. Those who must drive should slow down, increase following distance and turn off cruise control.

TxDOT has an interactive map of road conditions at www.DriveTexas.org.
