UPDATE: Nolan Co. Bridge Opens After 18-wheeler Fire Shuts It Down

The US 84 bridge at I20 in Nolan County is open after an 18-wheeler crashes on the concrete barrier.

The bridge is now open. A portable message sign is in place to advise drivers to reduce speed to 60 mph. Also, wide loads will be restricted from the bridge until permanent repairs are made.

Inspectors examined the bridge Saturday morning. There is damage, but it is surface damage. Structurally, the bridge is sound. They placed concrete barrier where the rail is missing and placed an asphalt patch where the surface was damaged.

The US 84 overpass at Interstate 20 near Roscoe is closed just one month after it reopened from an almost year-long construction project.  An 18-wheeler crashed on the bridge Friday, crushing part of the concrete barrier.  First responders on scene said the driver was going about 75 miles per hour around a curve and hit the barrier.  That caused the fuel tank to rupture, and the truck caught fire. Nobody was injured.

The rebuilt bridge opened to traffic in September after being closed for almost a year for construction.  The old bridge was deemed unsafe after an 18-wheeler crashed, damaging the overpass.

The Texas Department of Transportation says the bridge will remain closed until damage can be fully assessed.  Inspectors will examine it over the weekend.  I-20 remains open. US 84 traffic is being detoured west on I-20 to Cemetery Road.
