2:35 p.m. Update

The following information is from the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office regarding the two men that were arrested Friday morning after they attempted to steal a woman’s vehcile near Tye, and fired at officers:

At approximately 3:15 a.m. Friday morning, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) received a report from a homeowner in the 100 block of Mulberry Road in Merkel—the street is north of Tye, but has a Merkel address—that two unknown males were trying to steal her vehicle.

The homeowner yelled at the suspects from her kitchen window, and was shot at by one or more of the suspects, but was not injured.

A Tye Police officer arrived first on the scene, and was also fired upon, but not injured. TCSO officers arrived as well, and were also shot at several times by one or more of the suspects, again, without injury.

The homeowner was advised to stay inside and on the phone with dispatchers throughout, as officers attempted to locate the suspect. Additional TCSO officers and DPS troopers cordoned off the perimeter, and kept the public and school buses from entering or exiting the area.

Early in the incident, one of the suspects surrendered to officers as he walked from the residence. The second suspect was arrested approximately four hours later after he was observed by officers leaving a hiding place near the same Calling Party/Homeowner's residence.

The first suspect was identified as J.P. Smith (initials only), white male, 22 years old, while the second suspect was identified as Shawn Shankles, 21.

An assault rifle and a handgun were recovered at the scene. Both suspects were arrested and taken to the Taylor County Jail. TCSO, Tye PD, and DPS officers responded to the initial call. The location of the incident is outside of Tye and Merkel city limits, and is part of TCSO's jurisdiction.

Shawn Shankles has been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer, another count of attempted capitol murder for firing at the woman who called authorities, one count of the unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and one count of the possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

Shankles is being held on a $1.45 million bond.

At the time of this writing, Smith is still in the process of being booked. This information will be updated after booking is complete.
