Several War Hawks traveled to Sachse to attend the funeral of Billy Cole III.
ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University football team took the field for the first time during the 2014 pre-season on Thursday, less than 48 hour after the passing of team member Billy Cole III in an automobile accident. Pre-season drills were scheduled to open on Wednesday, but were deferred so that the War Hawks could meet together and share stories about their lost teammate, instead.
The McMurry War Hawks are going through another season of transition in athletics.
ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Director of Athletics Sam Ferguson has announced that longtime volleyball coach Cammie Petree has assumed the additional role of Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) for the university. Petree will be coaching her 19th season for the War Hawks in 2014, the longest tenure of service to McM among any of the current head coaches on staff.
ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University dropped a Heartland Conference doubleheader to the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks (20-24, 11-14 HC) lost by scores of 1-0 in extra innings in the opener and then fell by a 3-1 score in the nightcap to the Lions (23-21, 13-13 HC).
ODESSA, Texas – Playing a unique half-Heartland Conference and half non-conference doubleheader, McMurry University split the twinbill with the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at Roden Field. The Falcons (18-22, 9-12 HC) won the opener (which counted in the league standings), 6-3, and the War Hawks (19-22, 11-12 HC) took the second game, 9-8.
ABILENE, Texas – Texas A&M International University salvaged the final game of the series with host McMurry University, winning the Heartland Conference bout, 13-2, at Walt Driggers Field.
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – McMurry University split a doubleheader with regional No. 7-ranked Oklahoma Christian University, losing the opener 4-2 and taking the nightcap, 4-2, at Dobson Field. The teams will play the rubber game of the Heartland Conference series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at OC.
