Victor Sotelo was born and has lived in Abilene most of his life.
That’s why he enjoys covering news here so much. He started at KTAB in October of 2002 as a weekend photographer and got his chance at reporting a couple of years later when a weekend reporter spot opened up. The News Director at the time said he could give reporting a try if he wanted, but if it did not work out, there would not be a photography job to go back to.
18 years later he’s still here as Assistant News Director and Assignments Manager.
Now, along with occasionally reporting the news, it’s his job to oversee the day-to-day operations of the newsroom. In this roll, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is helping new reporters develop and hone their skills.
The news business is a job Victor never imagined enjoying so much until he started doing it. He says there really is nothing like going to a job you love and because of that, his family supports him in every way.
There have been many times when Victor could not participate in family activities because he was working late or had to leave in the middle of the night for breaking news, but his wife and three children understand.
Victor graduated from Abilene High School and got a degree in Photographic Technology from the Southeast Museum School of Photography at Daytona State College. He does still love still photography and plans to return to it one day – but for now, got any news for him to cover?
