Big Hearts: Breckenridge woman works to see her community cared for during hard times

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas (KTAB) - There are more than 5,500 people who call Breckenridge in Stephens County their home. Eva Cantrell is one of those residents. She is a wife, mother, and the owner of a Excel Hair Salon.

"This is our town. This is where we live. It's our family. It's our neighbors. It's our friends," says Cantrell.

"Our Town," is more than a motto. It's a non-profit organization Cantrell helped create 8 years ago, "I started Our Town 8 years ago. It is here to help people in Stephens county. Everything stays here in Stephens county to help with their fight against cancer."

Cantrell and about 9 others in the community work together to organize fundraisers to support local families going through a tough time, "Whether we pay for their gas, their eats overnight stays. We've replaced air conditioners in cars."

It's about a community,"That's who's affected by it. My sister is fighting now. We have clients coming in all the time that are fighting it. Our neighbors."

It started out small but has proven to make a big impact, "When we first started, we just did bake sales, donut sales, and now we do pink out sale sales during football season."

When asked why she does what she does, it's just Cantrell's style, "I just do the stuff because I enjoy it.."

Cantrell says people they are able to help often end up giving back once their own cancer is in remission.
