ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - An Abilene woman accused of abusing a 3-year-old whose injuries were blamed on a fall has been indicted.
Brianna Venegas, 23, was indicted on one count of Injury to a Child Thursday in connection to an incident that was reported in May of 2018.
Court documents state a family member of the 3-year-old came forward and showed detectives pictures of the child's face.
The detective who initially viewed the pictures believed there "appeared to be a slap mark," according to the documents.
This family member told the child's mother, "she was told that [the child] fell up the steps," the documents reveal.
During a forensic interview, the documents state the child replied "Bri poked me" when he was asked what happened to his face.
A child abuse expert at Cook Children's Medical Center reviewed the pictures and determined, "it doesn't look like a fall up or down the stairs. . .it is blunt impact but not sure with what."
Venegas was released from jail after posting a $25,000 bond.
