ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - An inmate found guilty of killing a correctional officer inside an Abilene prison has been sentenced to death by lethal injection.

After more than a full day of deliberation and a weeks-worth of testimony, jurors returned their verdict, deciding Dillion Gage Compton should be put to death for killing Officer Marianne Johnson.

He will now join more than 200 inmates on Texas' death row in Huntsville to await execution.

Compton was convicted last month for Capital Murder in connection to the death of Officer Johnson, whose body was found handcuffed to a pole inside the kitchen area of the French Robertson Prison Unit in July of 2016.

Compton was arrested after he was found at the scene of the crime.

A medical examiner revealed Officer Johnson's throat was crushed and she had scratches and bruising all over her body.
