Abilene Public Library’s Food for Fines means Christmas in July

News release from The Abilene Public Library:

Your Abilene Public Library is pleased to announce we’ll once again be hosting our Christmas in July program, designed to help our friends at the Food Bank of West Central Texas.  This great organization needs help throughout the year, so we’re hoping you’ll help us to give back to those in need in our community.

Staring July 1, and running throughout the entire month, your library will be hosting Christmas in July.  During this time, you may donate canned goods and other nonperishable items to waive late fees from your account.  It’s the same deal we offer during our December Food for Fines program.  For every two (2) canned goods donated, or box of food, we’ll waive $1.00 from your account in late fees.  There’s no limit to the amount of items you may donate, and it’s an excellent way to rid yourself of those pesky fees and bring your account in good standing again.

For example, if you have a charge of $10.40 in late fees, you would need to donate 11 nonperishable food items, or 20 canned goods, to waive the late fees from your account.  However, if you bring more items than needed, we will not give you change back, nor can we credit your account.  Additionally, we are unable to accept dented, dinged, damaged, expired, previously opened, government commodities, or home-canned items.

To participate in this program, simply bring your food items to the circulation desk at any branch location during our regular hours of operation and staff will remove the appropriate fees.  We are unable to provide you with a receipt for this type of transaction.
