ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Abilene was dubbed one of America’s “Top 10 Windiest Cities” during a study the Weather Channel conducted in March of 2016.
Researchers used average annual wind speed data from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center to determine the list. Only cities with census populations of at least 100,000 residents were considered in the study.
An article recapping the results says the Weather Channel, “didn’t rank cities based on a single record sustained wind speed or gust from one storm, but rather which cities are persistently the windiest year in and year out.”
Abilene was number 9 on the list with an average annual wind speed of 11.9 miles per hour. The Weather Channel reports the most common wind direction in Abilene is S-SSE, and April is the average windiest month (followed closely by March). The study also says that Abilene’s record wind gust was 78 miles per hour – recorded on June 15, 1983.
The Weather Channel ranking of America’s “Top 10 Windiest U.S. Cities” is as follows:
10. Buffalo, NY (11.8 mph)
9. Abilene, TX (11.9 mph)
8. Corpus Christi, TX (12 mph)
