ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene City Council will be considering an ordinance to allow alcohol consumption on city properties.
The Parks and Recreation Board passed the resolution at their meeting last Tuesday, recommending to the city that alcohol be allowed on properties rented by the public. This includes the Nelson Park Softball Complex, rec centers, The Abilene Community Theater and The Rose Park Tennis Center, among others.
Right now, alcohol is only permitted at the Abilene Zoo and Festival Gardens during special events.
City Manager Robert Hanna says the ordinance would bring in additional business for Abilene, but it would also help regulate some of the consumption that’s already happening at these events, setting a standard for future occurrances.
“I want to make sure that we don’t criminalize something that’s taking place perhaps already,” said Hanna. “Especially with something like this, you can’t just turn the other way, you either have to enforce it or not and if we’re not going to enforce it, then I need council to make sure that the ordinance we do have on the books is reflective of what our practice is.”
The proposal is expected to be considered at Thursday’s city council meeting.
