MITCHELL COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Dick Ware Transfer Facility in Colorado City is one of four correctional units that could close once Texas legislators set the budget for the next fiscal year.
The Bartlett State Jail in Bartlett, Texas, the Bridgeport Pre-Parole Transfer Facility in Bridgeport, Texas, and the West Texas Intermediate Sanction Facility in Brownfield, Texas, are on the chopping block as well under the Texas Senate’s preliminary budget for FY2018-2019.
A representative with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice told KTAB and KRBC these units could close because, “recent projections published by the Legislative Budget Board show very little offender population growth and we believe it may be possible to close one or more facilities without negatively affecting public safety.”
133 employees are currently staffed at the Ware Facility. The TDCJ says that if the facility closures are finalized,
“the majority of the staff could be absorbed at the Wallace Unit which is co-located on the same property.”
The preliminary Senate budget states that offenders housed at the Ware Facility and the other three units pending closure would be re-distributed to other TDCJ facilities around the state by September 1, 2017.
Texas’ budget for FY2018-2019 will be finalized by Governor Greg Abbott after it makes its way through the Texas Legislature this Spring. Stick with BigCountryHomepage to see if the Ware Unit closure is included in the final version.
