How Hunters Can Feed the Hungry in the Big Country

Abilene, Texas (KRBC)– Deer season is a great time for hunters. It’s also a great time for places such as Love and Care Ministries.

“Over these last several months we’ve been really blessed. There’s been a lot if deer shot,” said Mark Hewitt., Love and Care Ministries’ founder.

Why are hunters kills a blessing? It means more food for the hungry.

“We have a number of people who want venison, and a lot of hungry people out there, it only made sense that we all got together and did something that works out for them,” said Brent Stephens, owner of Stephens Wild Game Processing.

“We have a number of hunters out there who have to harvest a lot of game animals. They can’t consume all of that meat. Naturally, we didn’t want it to all go to waste so we got involved in the program and I decided to hook up with Mark Hewitt and we’re sending it to Love and Care Ministries,” said Stephens.

A main benefactor of the program is Love and Care Ministries.

“Last year we got a little over 6 thousand pounds. We’re probably halfway there this year,” said Hewitt.

“We do it for several churches, we don’t just do it there. We do it in several different locations as long as they’re on the approved Hunters for the Hungry list,” said Stephens.

Some other local ministries that benefit are Disability Resources, Highland Church of Christ, and City Lights

“We’re able to use it in our soup kitchen, were able to use it in our family food boxes and in all those things and it’s a very good thing because meat is very high,” said Hewitt.

The program is so beneficial because it saves ministries hundreds on meat.

“We’re always using some kind of meat. With this economy going crazy like it is and the meat’s high, that’s why dear meat is important to us,” said Hewitt.

And every deer season brings a different outcome for how much meat gets donated.

“This year so far has been a great year, last year was a super year, the year before, when we had the fires going on, it was low. Three or four thousand pounds of meat,” said Hewitt.
