Local Brewery Expands Distribution

News

What began as a hobby for three Abilene police officers has became a full scale brewery in Abilene.

“In your life or in your career you can step away and say let’s try this new venture. It was a no brainer because it was kind of a leap of faith to step out there and do something that hasn’t already been done in this town,” said owner Jeff Bell.

From brewery only open on Saturdays to beer distributor throughout the city and even out in San Angelo.

“We have seen growth continuously through the two year process. We’ve been through a couple of hills and valleys, summer time is slow for all businesses because people are gone or take family vacations but other than that we have been going gang busters for a while now,” said Bell.

The owners of Pappy Slokum credit their fast growing success to the product that they make.

“I think Abilene is kind of just now hitting its stride in the craft beer market. Making a quality product helps. “
“we are still small enough to where we can be hands on and our quality level is very high. That’s the beauty of slow growth is we don’t want to out grow the quality of our product,” said Bell.

The job  is work and play for the owners and they don’t see themselves slowing down soon.

“Used to always say you would know when you made it big when you were walking on the beach and you stepped on your own pop tops. So maybe someday that’ll happen, it’ll be interesting to see how that goes,” said Bell.

Pappy Slokum is only open Saturdays from 11 to 7.
