Brownwood, Texas (KTAB) – Many men and women are doing what they can to show their respects on Veterans Day, and a gym in Brownwood is showing their respects through their workout.

Crossfit Brownwood does what is called “Hero Workouts” to honor men and women who have fought for our freedom.

For each holiday that honors soldiers such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day. They do special workouts.

These workouts are meant to be much harder and longer than a typical workout. It is meant to make you work harder and fight to finish the workout and to not give up.

“I think it is just a small way to tribute to our veterans, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and just pay tribute with everything we have. It’s a small contribution that we can do,” said Michael Ballenger, who served in the Army for 8 years.

One of the “Hero Workouts” that the gym participates in every year is called “Murph”.

It honors the life of Michael Murphy, a United States Navy SEAL officer who was awarded the U.S. Military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the War in Afghanistan.

Murphy was killed on June 28, 2005 after knowingly leaving his position of cover, in order to get a clear signal to communicate with his headquarters which exposed him to direct enemy fire.

He provided his unit’s location and requested immediate support for his team and then returned to his position to continue fighting until he died from his wounds.

The Hero Workout called” Murph” includes:

  • 1 Mile Run
  • 100 pull-ups
  • 200 push ups
  • 300 squats
  • 1 mile run

Crossfit Brownwood honors the life of Michael Murphy, and others, with this “Hero Workout” every year.
