Family raising funds to support Abilene 3rd grader who’s battling rare cancer

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The family of an Abilene 3rd grader is raising funds to support her following a devastating rare cancer diagnosis.

8-year-old Ciara was getting ready to start her 3rd grade year at Allie Ward Elementary School when she received the news.

For years, her mom had been taking her to specialist after specialist for a painful “bump” that was growing under her left knee.

Every visit resulted in the same diagnosis – Osgood Schlatter’s Disease – but Ciara’s mom knew there was something more sinister involved.

On August 7, a surgeon removed the “bump”, which ended up being a 3 cm mass, instead of the suspected fluid-filled cyst.

Further pathology testing confirmed what her mother had feared, Ciara has cancer. A rare form called synovial sarcoma.

Now, Ciara and her family spend their days visiting doctors to discuss oncology treatments and undergo additional testing.

Her mother is on unpaid leave while she works to get Ciara to treatment hours or even states away, meaning her family is now caring for three children on a single income.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help offset the cost of Ciara’s treatment, as well as to support her family as they continue this long and painful fight.

“Every penny raised will go towards helping Ciara get the best treatment available regardless where it is provided and to keep their family afloat during this hard time,” the GoFundMe page reveals.
