Icy roads cause wrecks throughout Abilene Thursday morning

Local News

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Icy roads have caused wrecks on several major roads in Abilene Thursday morning.

At least 25 wrecks were reported throughout the City by 8:30 a.m., and police say at least 12 of those happened on the Winters Freeway.

A KTAB and KRBC crew observed wrecks on every overpass from Ambler Avenue to Buffalo Gap Road and beyond.

One of the wrecks was a pile-up on the S. 1st Street overpass involving at least 8 vehicles.

It’s unknown if anyone involved in these wrecks has sustained serious injuries, but at least a few occupants have been trapped inside their vehicles.

Police are warning drivers to slow down and be cautious as they travel throughout the day. Roads are not expected to thaw until late morning.

Advisory: First Responders are working several crashes, some major, due to icy roadways. Drivers need to be cautious and slow down. Bridges & Overpasses are especially more treacherous.— Abilene Police Dept (@abilenepd) February 28, 2019

The Texas Department of Transportation offers the following tips for driving in winter weather:

  • Use caution when driving over bridges and overpasses. These are the first to freeze.
  • Reduce speed and drive with caution. A vehicle needs at least three times more space to stop on a slick roadway.
  • Slow down when approaching emergency or maintenance vehicles, especially when their flashing lights are on. The law requires you to maintain a distance of at least 200 feet when approaching a snow plow, and do not pass on the right. Visibility can also be reduced during winter weather conditions.
  • Check area weather conditions on radio or television before starting a trip.
