MERKEL, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Merkel's Chief of Police was fired during Monday night's city council meeting.
Chief Chris Ortiz was terminated from his position following a discussion at the end of the meeting, which took place beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Heritage Hall.
It's currently unknown why Chief Ortiz was fired, but the city council agenda shows council members were discussing "disciplinary actions against the Chief of Police Position" when the decision to terminate was reached.
Merkel City Manager Steve Campbell confirmed Chief Ortiz was fired during a Texas Rangers-led investigation but did not comment on the nature of that investigation.
The Merkel Police Department says all additional details must come from the City Manager and they cannot offer any further explanation.
