Taylor Co. Sheriff introduces ‘challenge coins’ to help curb distracted driving

Local News

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) is rolling out a new set of challenge coins to remind motorists about the dangers of distracted driving.

Local State Farm agents gathered at the Sheriff’s office Wednesday afternoon to present a $2,500 check to pay for approximately 600 of the coins.

Officers plan to hand the coins out to people in the community to remind drivers to focus on driving while behind the wheel.

“They’ll have the coin with them, and occasionally they look at it and it’ll be a reminder,” says TCSO’s Lt. John Cummins. “Maybe they’ll pass the coin to someone else and then it’ll be a fresh reminder for someone else. It’s just something that suddenly puts the word out, ‘Hey, let’s think about what we’re doing, especially when we’re going to be driving.'”

Each coin is labeled with a list of distracted driving reminders, such as “don’t text and drive,” and “turn around, don’t drown.”
