CROWLEY, Texas (KXAN) — The family of a 13-year-old football player who died during practice is trying to understand what happened to their son.

Kyrell McBride-Johnson was practicing Wednesday night at Summer Creek Middle School in Crowley when he collapsed. Coaches performed CPR until paramedics could get him to the hospital, where he later died, according to the superintendent of Crowley Independent School District.

His mother, Monica McBride-Debbs, said her son was healthy and showed no signs of trouble before he collapsed. It was hot, but the boys had been drinking water.

“I was there the whole time,” she said. “They were just doing drills. There was no physical contact with the guys. They were just running drills.”

Kyrell ran track last year and had just started playing football this year. Wednesday was his second day of practice, and he was looking forward to it.

“He told his papa, he say, ‘Papa, tomorrow is a big day.’ Because they were going to teach him how to run routes. He didn’t know how to run routes. He said, ‘Papa, tomorrow is a big day,'” McBride-Debbs said.
