(KTAB/KRBC) – 1,500 Patriot Guard motorcycle riders will travel through the Big Country Thursday to escort  the unclaimed remains of 8 military veterans.

The caravan will begin in Amarillo as the remains, which have been unclaimed for decades, make their way to the San Antonio National Veterans Cemetery.

The route will take the riders through Snyder and onto I-20 in Sweetwater, then onto Hwy 70 down to Ballinger.

They are expected to stop for gas in the Sweetwater area around 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday.

“Joel Carver, a Missing In America Project representative, found these ashes and researched the backgrounds finding that 8 individuals were veterans but had never been given a proper burial. One in particular served in three different wars (WWII, Korean War, Vietnam) and was awarded the purple heart but was never claimed by family. The ashes and their caravan of motorcycling patriots will be taking the veterans to San Antonio’s National Cemetery where they will be honored and given a proper burial,” a press release explains.

KTAB and KRBC will have a crew on scene as the caravan drives through.
