GLENDALE, AZ (CNN) – A brave girl in Arizona is recovering after being accidentally shot.

Now her father is under arrest on charges of child abuse and aggravated assault.

Police say Eldon McInville was cleaning his shotgun and as he was walking through the hall to put it away, he tripped.

That caused the gun to fall out of his hand, and then it discharged, striking his 6-year-old daughter, who was just a few feet away from him in the same room.

While that story adds up, investigators say he was reckless handling the gun, prompting the charges.

When first responders got on scene, they were surprised by her demeanor.

“They said she was the bravest, strongest girl they’ve ever seen. she was talking. She wasn’t crying. she was asking questions as any 6-year-old would do and they airlifted to a local valley hospital in life-threatening condition,” said Sgt. John Roth, Glendale Police Department.

The girl is out of surgery and is in stable, but critical condition.

She will be in the ICU as she awaits more surgeries.
