ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – An Abilene bar owner has been arrested for tax fraud after allegedly under-reporting his mixed drink sales by more than $20,000.

Charles Seale, 46, was booked into the Taylor County Jail Friday for False Entry/Fail to Enter in Tax Records then released after posting a $5,000 bond.

Court documents state police began investigating Seale “after receiving information that Seale may be under-reporting his gross receipts and his gross receipts sales tax for businesses located in Abilene.”

Officers learned from an employee at one business – Lone Star Bar on the 500 block of Arnold Blvd – that “Seale reportedly instructed the employee not to ring-up payments by customers or show payments as less than what was paid by customers,” according to the documents.

Investigators also learned two previous audits had determined “significant amounts of mixed beverage taxes were due.”

The documents state a search warrant was executed at the Lone Star Bar in August, allowing investigators to seize receipts, several of which had “notes attached indicating the customers had paid their drink tab but the payments were to be considered complimentary drinks.”

A further investigation of the bar’s sale system indicated Seale had under-reported his total mixed beverage gross receipts by over $20,000 and he failed to report $1,657.46 in beverage gross receipts sales tax, the documents reveal.
