Abilene police chief commends citizens for stopping robbery at Academy Sport & Outdoors

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge is commending several citizens for stopping a robbery at Academy Sports & Outdoors in Abilene Monday night.

Chief Standridge says "the surveillance video shows four to five citizens blocking the suspect’s escape, and eventually they took the suspect to the ground when he tried to push past them. They then held the suspect down until the arrival of the officers."

Aaron Brown, 32, was taken into custody once police arrived on scene and is charged with Robbery.

The citizens are invited to the Police Department to accept a challenge coin on behalf of the Chief.

An arrest report filed with the Abilene Police Department states that when officers arrived just after 7:00 p.m., they found the citizens holding Brown down on the floor near the exit.

Witnesses told police Brown had taken a wallet from another customer and several bystanders, including a 9-year-old child, were injured when the victim chased Brown to get his property back, according to the report.

Brown is being held in the Taylor County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
