ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) – It’s that time for back to school drives, putting together supplies, clothes and other back to school needs for local students. Heart and Soul Salon and Maurice’s are partnering for a shoe drive to benefit kids at an Abilene elementary school.
Eleven year old Rayna Flores noticed a need at her elementary.
“A guy in my class he wore the same shoes over and over,” Flores said.
Immediately she wanted to help.
“I went to tell my mom and even asked her if I could give her some of my brothers shoes,” Flores said.
While her brother was too young to provide shoes for the student, Flores’ passion to help her fellow classmate inspired her mother to put on an entire shoe drive to help kids in need.
“I think that they go through a sad time because they’re not like everybody else and they don’t get to have as much shoes as other people do,” Flores said.
Her mom’s salon, Heart and Soul, partnered with Maurice’s, a women’s clothing store, to take donations that will help a local elementary. They have already received 70 pairs of shoes.
“There’s so many opportunities to be able to give but to be able to say okay this is the game plan like we want to give but this is what we’re going to do to give I think it speaks more than what we can even say. I mean 70 shoes alone that’s 70 kids that will have some that didn’t,” Maurice’s representative, Brittany Ramirez said.
For many parents, the back to school expenses can rack up quickly.
“So many supplies, back packs, clothes so many things that go into it,” Ramirez said.
Flores’ desire to make a difference jump started these two businesses to help relieve some of the stress.
“It makes me feel really happy and helpful,” Flores said.
To donate to the shoe drive you can drop off elementary school sized shoes to Heart and Soul Salon on North 1st Street. The shoe drive ends Friday, August 10th.
