(CNN) – Avid runners know a good pair of shoes doesn’t last forever, but that doesn’t mean they have to be trashed.

Adidas is reenvisioning what it means to be sustainable by developing a recyclable running shoe.

The design was no small feat. The company has been working for 10 years to get the shoe just right.

Once the shoes wear out, Adidas plans to repurpose them into more shoes.

‘Future-Craft Loop’ is made of thermoplastic polyurethane.

The creators needed one all-purpose material throughout the shoe to ensure recyclability.

Of course, Adidas needs to get the shoes back for the process to work.

So for now, about 200 people are giving the product a try.

If all goes well, they could be on store shelves by 2021.
