ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Good news for drivers on the north side of Abilene — State Highway 351 at Interstate 20 is now fully open.
The heavily traveled highway has been down to minimal lanes in recent months as crews worked to replace the I-20 overpass bridge.
Additionally, frontage roads in the area are also back to two lanes.
The construction, which started back in March, did not come without controversy. Businesses in the area reported shrinking financials because the lack of customers.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) said that although the highway is officially reopened, there will be some short-term lane closures in the coming weeks to complete the work on the overpasses.
TxDOT said the new intersection is now paved with materials that require minimal maintenance and are more durable. The road is expected to last 20 years or more.
The entire project was estimated to cost $14,639,000.
Officials last month said the project was ahead of schedule and will be done by March 2018.
