ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene Zoo is considered one of the most popular attractions in town, drawing in thousands of tourists and locals year round.
But the numbers this year are looking a little different.
Abilene Zoo executive director, Bill Gersonde says attendance is actually down from this time last year.
Gersonde attributes the decrease to some bad weather The Big Country has seen in 2018, including rain and excessive heat.
“Like I said, there were just some rainy weekends. When you have 4,000 people on a good weekend and you lose two or three good weekends, those numbers are hard to make up,” said Gersonde.
While numbers are down, that doesn’t necessarily mean the zoo is in trouble financially. Gersonde says the zoo prepares for unexpected weather by budgeting conservatively throughout the year.
