Big Hearts: Mission of Abilene non-profit hooks local businessmen

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - It's a peaceful escape for anyone who likes to fish, but especially these young anglers.

"It's kind of a diversion. The kids a lot of times, they'll come in and they won't want to tell their stories, it's painful," says therapist, Carlton Burke, the Clinical Director at the Audrey Grace House for New Horizons.

New Horizons is a residential treatment center for children in fostercare.

Burke adds, "A lot of kids...it puts them at ease."

While fishing has always been offered in the back yard of the property, "It was very difficult for our kids to get down and fish. They needed a way for them to reach further down in the water," says Hollie White, the Development Director at New Horizons.

It wasn't until recently a dock was donated to the Abilene non-profit.

"We just a saw a need and met it," says Kent Beck of Kent Beck Motors in Abilene.

Beck helped to hook the right people, "I can sell you a lot of cars but I can't build you a fishing dock."

But Beck's friend, Ken Draper, a carpenter could.

"My part was just the funding and putting the right people in place for it to be built," adds Beck.

Draper says, "It was a lot of fun. They come down and there was a couple of them sitting on the trackhoe with me."

"Very rarely is there a day that there is not somebody on that dock," says Michelle Perkins, the Program Director at the Audrey Grace House.

The impact goes even deeper.

"It's just an escape from the lifestyle they came from. They just get to come out and have fun," adds Perkins.

Beck says, "It's just a blessing to see the smile on the kids faces and know that they've got a place that they can just get out and enjoy stress-free. "

"It's it's really amazing to see their eyes light up when they catch a fish," Draper adds.

Beck is part of the Abilene chapter, The 100 Men Who Care. It's an organization where the 100 member donate $100 dollars to a local non-profit after learning about an organization's specific needs. After helping out, New Horizons, Beck recognized the additional need for the dock and that's how the project began. Boyd Fencing also made a fence for a basketball court on the New Horizons property.
