ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) – The Abilene Woman’s Club has been around 90 years helping women connect and invest in each other and the community.
It’s an organization that has stood the test of time. The Abilene Woman’s Club began in 1928 and received their charter one year later.
“It was the time where women stayed home and didn’t have careers and so they had time on their hands,“ AWC Publicity Chairman Celia Gesting said.
For the last nine decades the club has been a place women can connect and serve the community.
“Well if you want to get something done, ask a group of women,“ Gesting said.
The biggest aspect of the club however is empowering women.
“They build you up and make you feel good and they always have,“ AWC President Elect Mandy Gollihar said.
“Well we can have one woman with great ideas but you get a group of us together and we bounce our ideas off of each other it just gets better and better,“ Gesting said.
They especially want to mentor the younger generations.
“As long as Abilene stands we want women to be in leadership roles we want them to do good work in the community and if we set the example they will follow,“ Gesting said.
While reflecting on this 90 year milestone rich with history, members and leaders can’t help but to look to the future.
“We had brilliant women that came before us and we just thank God that we had them.“
“We’re in the process now of really trying to bring us into the 21st century to make things more interesting for the younger ones to want to be part of us,“ Gollihar said.
