ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The City of Abilene is considering enacting restrictions on Bird Scooters and other ride-sharing vehicles.

Thursday, council members will discuss making changes to the City’s current ride-sharing ordinance, which would limit the areas where the vehicles can be used as well as how permits to facilitate the vehicles can be obtained.

The new ordinance would restrict Bird scooter usage to a 1-mile radius around the Abilene Christian University Campus and a 1-mile radius around the Central Business District, which includes downtown Abilene and the south of downtown Abilene area.

Additional usage areas could be added if the City Manager decides to do-so in the future.

Any business who wishes to obtain a permit to distribute ride-sharing vehicles would also have to pay a $1,500.00, plus a renewal fee of  $750.00 under the new ordinance.
