Cold War missile silo in Lawn transitioning into educational center

LAWN, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – A Cold War era missile silo in Lawn is in the process of becoming an education center.

The Atlas Missile Base Cold War Center in Lawn is one of 12 built in this area during the Cold War.

It goes 18 and a half stories down, and used to house Atlas Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, that reportedly could have reached the USSR in 30 minutes.

The owner now says this story needs to be preserved and taught.

“It was a Dyess Air Force Base mission that kept the world safe, and this was not theoretical, this was real time, this actually allowed us to survive the cold war and Texans should be immensely proud of that heritage,” says owner Larry Sanders.

The Atlas Missile Base Cold War Center is not open to the public right now, but those are the plans.

Right now school groups and scouts and others can take private tours.
