Dad says he made 'right decision' to shoot attacker to protect daughter

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina (WNCN) - A North Carolina father said he was just protecting his 2-year-old daughter when he shot a man in a Food Lion parking lot last week.

Marquel White, 26, said when he walked into to the grocery store off Rosehill Road with his daughter, he had no idea he'd walk out to a fight in the parking lot.

White said Richard Bradley started following him, yelling expletives.

White said he kept walking and put his toddler daughter in the vehicle.

That's when White said Bradley tried to attack him from behind with a knife.

White said he pulled out his gun and shot the 31-year-old in the stomach.

"If I didn't do it, I could've ended up dead and the baby could've ended up hurt or kidnapped -- anything could've happened. So I feel like what I did was definitely the right decision," said White.

White was not charged following the incident.

"It was deemed to be self-defense, the individual that got shot was the aggressor in this incident," said Fayetteville Police Major Robert Ramirez.

Police said Bradley will be arrested once he is released from the hospital and face a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
