Drone pilots test their skills in racing league

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) – There are basketball leagues, baseball leagues and even bowling leagues but now Abilene has it’s own drone racing league.  A group of pilots get together every other Saturday to fly through different courses.

For drone pilot Matt Briggs racing is a feeling like no other.

“You truly feel free. You feel like you’re flying which is super awesome.  The comradery with the other guys, getting together and racing is amazing.  I really like competition. I’m an adrenaline junkie so when you’re flying your thumbs are twitching and shaking and it’s a super good feeling,” Briggs said.

Getting into the sport just a year ago, Briggs has found his new passion.

“The first time I put the goggles on and flew it was awesome.  It’s literally like being on a roller coaster, you can feel it in your stomach while you’re flying.  It’s super super fun,” Briggs said.

Briggs gets together with a group of pilots every other Saturday to race.

“There’s five races at two minutes a piece and what we’ll do is we will count laps so every lap they complete we kind of go from there and at the end of the race we add up whoever has the most laps completed during the two minutes wins the race,” drone pilot Travis Sorenson said.

The guys have formed a friendship with a competitive edge.

“It’s a good time.  It’s a great time. We always come out here and have a good time,” Sorenson said.

The races are open for anyone who wants to watch or participate at Seabee Park.
