ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - The finishing touches are being put on the new Wylie East Elementary School which will hold pre-k through first graders this fall. The new campus is next to Kirby Lake and those grade levels living East of Highway 83-84 will be attending the East elementary campus.
"We are a fun-loving younger bulldog here at Wylie East elementary," Wylie Independent School District Superintendent Joey Light said.
After months and months of long hours and hard work, the new elementary school is almost ready for students to walk the halls.
"It's really an exciting time," Light said.
"We started with just dirt and it just seemed like the process was taking so long and people were saying it's not going to happen, it's not going to happen but we just knew it was," Wylie East Elementary Principal, Kim McMillan said.
Housing pre-k through first graders come August 27th, the new campus was designed with the bulldog pups in mind.
"We have bright colors, we have in the cafeteria we have geometric shapes that are on the floor then go into the walls. We were thrilled to have an opportunity to really to build a school that was specifically designed for young students so that drove a lot of our decisions as far as colors and and types of access they were going to have to different areas of the building," Light said.
Expecting about 400 students, this next year, Wylie East has 28 classrooms all color coordinated.
"We have a yellow door here so if I'm a kindergartner, first grader I'm going to be able to say not only where the room is but what color that is working on," Light said.
Now, teachers are moving into the building and decorating their classrooms while the finishing touches are put on the elementary for "Meet the Teacher" next week.
"Things that are coming into place, the playground will be installed, we've got more sidewalks to be installed, some signage," Light said.
While there is still some work to do until Wylie East Elementary's debut, the administration is excited about their new home.
"We've been in pretty intense labor the last few weeks and really having to work hard trying to pull some things across the finish line and then when you got that baby in your hands and it's all worth while and so that's where we are. We've got the baby in our hands, we're excited and it was all worth it," Light said.
"Teachers were skipping in the hall yesterday because they are so excited to be here so it's really fun, it's a lot of fun and we think the kids are just going to make it even more fun," McMillan said.
The new school is expected to be complete by Thursday, August 23 for "Meet the Teacher" and school will start August 27th.
