Abilene, Texas (KRBC) –
History is in the making at McMurry University, they will have their first-ever softball team this coming 2018 season.
Head coach, David McNally, and his players for the new McMurry softball team are ready to compete and win year one.
“Ain’t nothing better than to start something from the ground up and year one be competitive and believe with the kids that we have here, we are going to do that,” said coach McNally.
“Our goal is to surprise everybody, go out there with a bang, instead of oh that is a first-year team,” said captain Rachel Ripley.
For the team captains, after junior college, they weren’t sure if they’d continue playing softball until they got the phone call from coach McNally.
“I am so glad I ended up making that decision because now that I look back I can’t even imagine not playing softball right now so I mean that was definitely one of my better decisions,” said Ripley.
“I thought I was going to be done and I thought I was going to be OK with just going to school but now that I am still playing and I get back on the field I realized I really did not want to stop playing,” said captain Adrienne Nairn.
For the next couple of years, the teams home games will be played at Red Bud Park.
“To be good we have to challenge ourselves so what we have done is we have scheduled some good teams that are going to challenge us and make us better,” said coach McNally.
“I just want to play as hard as we can, maybe knock some people out of the postseason, be a real wrecking ball for this year,” said Nairn.
They are excited about the many firsts they get to be a part of for the school.
“Not many people get to start something, not many people get to be a part of history, whether it is a first win or a first hit or first out first strikeout, there are a whole lot of things fixing’ to happen this year,” said coach McNally.
Their first practice will be held January 15th and their first game with be on February 2nd.
