ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) – The big chain stores and convenience stores dotting the Abilene landscape have made huge impacts, and that’s felt by small businesses. On the north side of town, one of those smaller shops has been around for nearly 40 years, continuing to beat the odds.
Despite fierce competition, Galvan’s Quick Stop is hanging in there, thanks to their long history, and a lot of passion. Ever changing, store has sold different wares over the years, but it’s consistently remained a community favorite. “We try to carry a little bit of this, a little bit of that, that maybe the common stores, the big stores don’t handle.”, says owner Stella Galvan.
Despite support from the neighborhood, times aren’t always easy for this small business. “This economy is bringing in a lot of hardship for a lot of people”, says Galvan. Over the years, the convenience store has also added a successful U-Haul rental business to help out.
Through the tougher times, the store pushes on, with the whole family helping out. That’s given the younger generation some lessons along the way. Granddaughter Elyana says the most important lesson she’s learned is, “Always help people in need when they need help and can’t do it themselves.”
That family help, and a love for the work, are what help Stella open the shop each morning, and stay long hours in the evening. “I guess I grew up to believe that I could handle a business.”, she says. She laughs,”I’m still here, nothing is running me off yet!”
