The Superbowl for the city of Sweetwater is right around the corner. It’s an event that generates over $8 million dollars to the community of Sweetwater each year, and it involves a reptile that doesn’t appease many people. PR Director of Sweetwater Jaycees explains why this is even more special that previous years. “This year is our 60th anniversary so we have some really good country bands playing on Friday and Saturday night, and our cook off is bigger and better along with our gunning show. We have more vendors and more vendor space. There’s going to be something for everybody in Sweetwater, Texas the second weekend in March.”

It was media day and we got to see Rattlesnakes get milked, and even got to witness a live skinning of the slithering reptile. It’s an event that people travel from all over the world to take part in, and it brings families a good bonding experience. Jaelynn Page, a pageant contestant explains how much this event means to her. “My family has been in it for many many years now, so it’s definitely something we go to together and we have a blast. The Jaycees, the work that they go through all year just to put this thing on and how much of a family that they’ve become along with what that they do for our community is just amazing.”

The Miss Snake Charmer Pageant will be held a day before the event, where several contestants will battle head to head for a $1,000.00 scholarship award. The ladies will be showcasing their talents such as singing, dancing and playing an instrument.

Although there were many jitters and an elevated heart rate this afternoon, that didn’t keep this brave women from getting up close and personal with these rattlesnakes. In fact, many of them loved it. “My favorite part is just skinning the snake, because I can just remember the first time I was grossed out from feeling the nerves moving in my hand, and feeling like it was going to get me when it didn’t even have a head”, said Jaelynn Page.

This event will be held on March 9th, 10th, and 11th at the Nolan County Coliseum. It you want to partake in the Rattlesnake hunt it’ll be $75.00 per person.
