“Most fundraisers you see are for sports or things like that and it was the first time a lot of people had seen anybody raise money just for books for students,” said Stacey Blackwell-Yocca, Maryellen’s mom.

They raised almost $500 in two hours and when her mom asked her what she wanted to do with all the money, she knew.

“I bought one book for everybody in my class from the book fair,” said Maryellen, a first grader.

The rest of the money went to buying the library more books. She bought 44 in total, placing a dedication on each one.

“Very proud of her, it makes us always tear up. She has always been very compassionate for other people so it was just exciting to know she wanted to help,” said Stacey.

Maryellen hopes to continue to do this but next year get more kids involved in raising money.
