TYLER, Texas (KETK) – A Kilgore family is winning big. $50,000 to be exact.

They got the money after following a treasure hunt laid out in a book they were reading.

Coy Lothrop started reading “Breakfast Tea and Bourbon” after friends told him about the treasure hunt in it.

“The book and the hunt launched February 9th, 2017 and I was already 4 months behind, I picked it up in June,” Lothrop said. “I thought wow, I’m way behind, there are thousands of other hunters that have been looking already, and so I wanted to be really fast.”

He quickly read it and bounced ideas off of his family.

“The first 2/3 of the book is all about getting to the general area of where the treasure is, then you follow exactly what the characters do in the book because they’re on the treasure hunt too,” author Pete Bissonette said.

They followed it to Hot Springs, Arkansas and found the treasure, a bamboo flute.

“We kind of screamed and yelled for a little while and just kind of in shock now!” Coy’s wife Amy said.

Earning them $50,000 plus  $5,000 to the charity of their choice.

“We chose Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas,” Lothrop said. “My daughter Bailey had really severe scoliosis and they did an excellent job.”

The money will help them with medical debt, and even get Bailey a car.

They will always remember how this hunt took them out of their element.

“We’re usually like secluded and kind of on technology so to actually put that down and go and adventure and be together it was a big bonding experience,” Bailey said.

The family was recently able to meet up with the author to deliver the flute they found and get their big check.

There are two additional treasure hunts in the book.
