ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Organizers for the Texas 4-H Horse Show State Finals announced that the event will be leaving Abilene for Bryan, Texas starting in 2019, according to An Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) press release.
After 35 years at the Taylor County Expo Center, the contract to host the finals was awarded to the Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan, according to the release.
“We’re losing a member of the family,” ACVB Executive Director Nanci Liles said in the release. “But, this was a business decision. It isn’t a reflection on our city, the Expo Center or any of our hospitality partners.”
The contract awarded to the Brazos County Expo Center will run from 2019-2023
4-H leadership said the move was based on financial incentives offered by Brazos County, according to the release. Abilene has been invited to bid on hosting the finals again when the new contract expires in five years.
During that time, the Expo Center and ACVB plan on working to replace the week-long event with new business.
“While we are disappointed by this news, we now have the opportunity to work with other groups that want to host events in Abilene during July,” Expo Center General Manager Rochelle Johnson said in the release. “We are thankful for our relationship with the 4-H Management Team from College Station, as well as the 4-H Horse Show leadership in Abilene. We wish the best to the Texas St. 4-H Horse Show in their move the Brazos County Expo.”
