ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Two Abilene citizens were honored received Civilian Appreciation Awards from the Abilene Fire Department (AFD) for their efforts saving a young girl from drowning, according to AFD.

On July 3, 2018, Sheila Joy of Abilene came to the effort of a young girl she had found floating unresponsive in a pool at her apartment complex. Joy immediately went to retrieve the girl from the pool, according to AFD. At this time, Josh Graham arrived to assist in the rescue.

Joy and Graham together determined the girl was not breathing, and began CPR. After two minutes, the girl regained consciousness and began breathing again, according to AFD.

“Everyday, we as firefighters come to work prepared to save lives, prepared to respond to those in need, and prepared to put the needs of others before our own.” Abilene Fire Chief Cande Flores said during the award ceremony. “On July 3rd, Sheila and Josh stepped in and did just that; and a little girl is alive and well because of it.”
