UTPB STEM dual enrollment no longer free, parents unhappy

ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) — Offering free dual enrollment through the STEM academy is not feasible like the previous year. They also said they do not have the same kinds of funding mechanisms as other universities, according to UTPB.

Jennifer Pando is a STEM parent, and right now she isn’t too happy because what was once free will now be paid out of pocket.

“It comes as a hard hit mainly because of the unexpected expense,” said Pando. “As well as  just the fact of the morality behind it all. “What going to happen in two years when I have to pay for two kids who are actually taking these courses.” .

Breaking it down, Pando says this year UTPB STEM plans to charge $300 to $400 a semester. While it is at a reduced cost, it’s still not the original price they hoped for: free.

“It’s an unexpected expense that I wasn’t expecting,” said Pando.

For Pando and many other parents at the UTPB STEM Academy, they say they understand free dual credit isn’t feasible right now. However, they hope in the future it doesn’t come as quite the surprise.
