Zephyr community assessing damage from Tuesday’s tornado

ZEPHYR, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – From downed power lines and fallen trees to homes and businesses destroyed by the twister, the Zephyr community is working to pick up the pieces.

It’s been a long year for the town of Zephyr, with a damaging hail storm last May, a wildifre in July, and now a tornado.

Storms sweeping through much of the Big Country and the Heartland have left Zephyr reeling in the aftermath.

“We’re looking for damage, we’re trying to figure out was this a damaging straight line wind or a tornado,” says Hector Guerrero with the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has come out to figure out what exactly happened.

“So far, we believe there was a tornado that came through Zephyr last night,” Guerrero says. “We have 24 buildings right now that we’ve counted that have damage here in Zephyr, which for Zephyr, that’s probably about 50 percent.”

For one Zephyr resident, the winds from the tornado flipped his home while he was inside.

“I decided to crawl underneath my mattress, and next thing I remember is pushing the couch off of me because I guess the couch landed on me,” Joe Burkett says.

Escaping without a scratch is something he says can only be explained by, “God, definitely.”

For the rest of the town, now starts the rebuilding process, but it’s a challenge they’ve faced before.

The National Weather Service is expected to release its official report on Thursday.
