ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene Zoo has put the spider monkeys back on display after a jaguar escaped her enclosure and attacked a member of their tribe Monday morning.

The jaguar, 2-year-old Estrella, was found sitting on top of the spider monkey habitat, which is adjacent to her enclosure, around 8:10 a.m. and was quickly tranquilized and contained.

The injured spider monkey was euthanized following the incident, and zoo officials are still trying to piece together what happened.

No surveillance video of the area is available, so it’s currently unknown how Estrella escaped or how long she was roaming free, but the Zoo’s Executive Director, Bill Gersonde, says there is no sign that human error played a part.

The United States Department of Agriculture and the Zoo are conducting separate investigating of the escape.

BigCountryHomepage will provide updates as soon as more information on the escape becomes available.
