Cisco College lineman killed by resident during burglary

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) — A man was killed after shots were fired at a north Austin apartment complex in the early Saturday morning hours.

According to Austin Police, Tony Ray Green Jr. and another unidentified male, kicked in the door to an apartment belonging to a man named David Smith, in an attempt to rob him. After making forced entry into the apartment, Smith shot Green in self-defense. The other unidentified male immediately fled the scene.  

Police say Green, 22, was found unresponsive in the parking lot of The Madison at Wells Branch Apartments after multiple 911 calls from surrounding neighbors beginning at 2:14 a.m. Green had “obvious trauma to his body.”

Austin-Travis County EMS pronounced the victim dead at 2:36 a.m.

The Travis County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy that same day and ruled the cause of death a homicide. The homicide case had been sent to the District Attorney’s Office for review. 

Smith was arrested on a marijuana charge and booked into the Travis County Jail.

Hutto ISD confirmed that Green was a standout football player for the Hutto Hippos. His senior year, the team went to the state quarter finals. Green graduated in 2015. He was enrolled at Cisco College on the school’s football roster.
